UMANO — Catharina van de Ven, 2018

Levensgrote knielende figuur.

Mijn beeld is wit — de man knielt — onderdanig? Of juist trots.

Afmetingen: 135 cm h × 60 cm × 80 cm, exclusief sokkel.

UMANO — Catharina van de Ven, 2018

Life-size kneeling figure. A contemporary reflection on social realism — made with traditional techniques, in the same manner as the classical sculptors worked long ago.

This work does not come from curiosity. It comes from intimate knowledge — what it means to stand between two worlds, to be white and yet not entirely white, to be Dutch and yet carry something else.

How do ‘Dutch’ people look at you: you have the build of your North-Holland ancestors and that beautiful color of the Indonesian branch — but how white are you, exactly?

The way we look at the colonial past is shifting. My figure is white — the man kneels — submissive? Or proud. He wears his batik cloth: even though I am white, I do not forget where I come from.

Contradiction, division, domination — one human being forcing another to their knees. How human are we, in 2018?

Dimensions: 135 cm h × 60 cm × 80 cm, excluding plinth.
